New .au registrant transfer policy
The transfer policy for .au domains will be relaxed from 1 June 2008, to allow a registrant to transfer their domain name license to another eligible entity, for any reason.
Previously transferring a .au domain name was subject to the Transfers (Change of Registrant) Policy (2004-03), which will continue to apply until 1 June.
Highlights of the new policy include:
- A domain name cannot be registered solely for the purpose of resale or transfer to a third party
- Transfer of a domain name can only take place 6 months after the initial registration. A domain name previously renewed or transferred does not need to wait.
- After this six month period, domain names can be offered for sale or transfer by the registrant by any means. This includes listing on a domain brokerage website, advertising in a newspaper, or by direct sale.
- Normal eligibility and allocation rules apply to the new registrant and will be processed using the standard transfer form. A transfer fee may be charged by the registrar.
- auDA will endeavour to collect aggregated and statistical data from parties on a voluntary basis, with regards the sale method and price, to improve access to market information for buyers and sellers.
The new changes have been approved by the auDA Board following recommendations from the 2007 Names Policy Panel.
