Domain name FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What domain name should I use?

Businesses put much time, effort and thought into their websites and logos but tend to forget about the domain name they will be using.

A domain name is the unique name that identifies your site and is made up of at least two parts separated by dots (for example Ireckon.com and Ireckon.com.au are our domain names).

When choosing what domain to utilize, there is no secret formula to use. You just need to ensure it is relevant, easy to spell, easy to type and easy to say. Use it as a branding tool and make sure it appears on all business and promotional material so people will remember where to find you.

Your domain name should reflect your site or business. When customers search for your products and/or services online the first name they will type in is your company name. If someone else holds that domain name you may lose business.

Ireckon provides you the ability to purchase your domain names from the following top level domains:

What does it mean when my domain is in redemption?

The redemption period is a Domain Registry period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name is deleted after having expired un-renewed. Instead of just getting deleted and returning to the pool of domain names available for registration, the existing registrar keeps a hold on the domain name in a REDEMPTION PERIOD. During this 30-day redemption period, the original domain registrant (owner of the domain) is allowed to retrieve the domain name from deletion by contacting their registrar. This process costs an additional fee.

How do I get my domain out of redemption?

To get the domain out of redemption, you need to contact your domain registrar where the domain currently resides. They can help you with this process, and will usually incur a fee to regain the domain.

I recently purchased a domain name, but I am unable to open the website.

Purchasing a domain name does not mean that it will come with a website. A domain name is just a representation or recognisable name for a website it is linked to.

My website stopped working. I have checked my domain and it is expired, however I was not informed that it was going to expire.

When the domain was first registered, an email address was entered by the person registering it, so the owner is contactable for events like an expiring domain. It is common that during the life of the domain, that the contact details in it, are not being kept up to date. It is normal that we may change our ISP, or change email addresses. Because the email address on the domain is now invalid, the owner no longer receives these notifications when the domain is about to expire. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the details are always current and up to date.

The details cannot be updated once the domain has expired, so it will need renewing first, before it becomes accessible again.

How do I change the contact details on my domain?

The details can be updated by logging in to the domain management console at the registrar with which it currently resides, (i.e. www.ireckondomains.com/). Usually a username and password is required to access it, which would have been emailed to you when the domain was purchased. It is always advised to keep the details up to date so that you will receive email notifications when the domain is nearing expiry.

I have just purchased a domain, and am wondering how long it will take to become active.

It depends on the domain that was purchased. Any domain with an extension ending with .au will usually take a little longer, as they are reviewed manually to ensure the ABN / ACN match the registered Business name and is a close representation of the Company name. However, they usually become available within 24 – 48* hours.

Most other domains become active within 24* hours.

* As these given time frames do reflect the usual situation, some delays can occur which are beyond our control.

I just received a renewal notification for my domain, however do not wish to renew.

This is fine, and you can usually ignore the renewal notice if you do not wish to keep the domain. The emails are sent out automatically from the registrar’s servers, and cannot be stopped. However, once the domain has expired, the email notifications will stop. Your domain will be held for about 40 days, and will then be deleted automatically and return to the public pool, which will allow someone else to purchase and own it.

How do I cancel my domain?

Unfortunately a domain name cannot be cancelled. They have to expire on their own. Several renewal reminders will be sent to you as it gets closer to its expiry date; however you can ignore them if you do not wish to renew it. It will eventually expire, go into redemption, and then be completely deleted.

I just purchased a new domain, however I’ve misspelt my contact details.

This is not a problem. Once the domain is active, a domain management email and tax invoice will be sent to your email address (or the address used in the registration process). If however you have misspelt the email address, then it’s more than likely you won’t receive these emails. In this case, you can contact domains@ireckon.com and provide as much information as you can (i.e. Domain name, when it was registered etc), and request the tax invoice to be sent to you. The domain management details can be reset however sufficient identification is required, along with a valid email address, to allow us to retrieve the details for you and forward them to the appropriate address.

Once you have received the domain management account details, can you login to the administration tools on www.ireckondomains.com and change the contact details.

I want to be able to make the new domain to load up my existing website. How do I do that?

This is usually called a Domain Point & Park, which is something ireckon will have to setup for you. Please email support@ireckon.com and provide as much information as possible, i.e. which domain you would like setup to do this, where you would like it to go, etc., and we will get back to you with further instructions.

Note: Point & Park is simply DNS hosting, which incurs a $33 (incl. GST) per year hosting fee.
